HF

I have been QRV on the HF bands since the end of 2003. Since then, the solar cycle has declined, so activity on 15m/10m has decreased. Hopefully after 2008 conditions, and activity, will improve! Combined with aerial problems on 160m/80m, my activity has been mainly confined to 40m/20m.

During IOTA 2008 contest

As of the end of May 2009, I dismounted the HyGain AV-14AVQ and removed the top section vertical and top-hat redials. I replaced this with a shorter vertical section with longer top-hat radials, and a coil with long top-hat radials. This is known as the MK-80 modification for the HyGain AV-14AVQ. This is what it looks like now:

AV-14AVQ + MK80

The up side of this modification is that the vertical now tunes up on 80m. The down side is that the SWR starts to rise above 7.050MHz and needs to be manually retuned to reduce the SWR below 1.15:1. Not a problem! I only need to put up the wire when trying to play on 160m.

HF station as of March 2009

I have no amplifiers on HF. For most modes I usually run around 20 watts output, with 5W QRP for contests.

HF gridsquares worked on all bands and modes.
