The River Winniford joins the sea at Seatown. This is normally a 'lost river'. The storm surges and high tides push up the shingle on the beach, blocking the river's entry to the sea. The river drains out buy percolating through the shingle.

Following heavy rain inland, and a very high storm tide, the shingle bank normally blocking the River Winniford was eroded away. Two days later, the river was again blocked.

The wide and gently sloping beach at Seatown provides easy access to the base of Wear Cliffs and Golden Cap at low tide.
